F/O Montgomery, born in Temiskaming, Ontario in 1920, was a pilot with 174 Squadron. He was a machinist apprentice when he enlisted in 1941. He trained at No. 3 ITS, No. 15 EFTS, and No. 11 SFTS. He earned his commission in 1942. He was mentioned in Despatches January 1, 1943 for service on Hurricanes with 174 Squadron. He flew at Dieppe. As Acting F/Lt, was awarded DFC on 25/7/1944. From Typhoon and Tempest: "This officer has led his flight with great skill and resolution in many attacks on a variety of targets, including airfields, construction works and gun positions, He has displayed the greatest determination in pressing home his attacks and has gallant example has been most inspiring."
